New England Furies #1
by Nicola R. White
Tara Walker dreams of more excitement than slinging plates of seafood for Cape Cod tourists, but as she learns when she is attacked and forced to fight for her life, fate sometimes has a funny way of giving you exactly what you wish for. Faced with strange new powers and embroiled in a murder investigation, Tara must now race to uncover the secrets of the ancient Fury that has woken inside of her – and of the evil that stalks her.
As if Tara’s life hasn’t gotten complicated enough, she is forced to ally herself with Jackson Byrne, witness to her assault and uncle to a pint-sized oracle whose fate is intertwined with hers. Skeptical, stubborn, and oh-so-sexy, Jackson wrestles with demons of his own. He is determined to ignore the attraction rising between them even faster than the body count, but like it or not, he and Tara need each other if they are to unravel the mysteries that surround them.

The situation was majorly freaky and I just wanted to go home and pretend it had never happened. But how could I?
He got what he deserved.
He got what he deserved.
The voice came from inside my head, sharp and sibilant, like when I'd hissed at the guy a few minutes ago.
“Oh, God. What's happening to me?”
Clearly, I was losing my mind.
After being attacked and almost raped, Tara Walker's life will never be the same now that she's awakened the Fury within. With the help of an acient warrior, a witch, her best friends, a sexy and frustrating ex-military man, a pint-sized oracle and her mother, Tara will discover what being a Fury means. And if that isn't enough to keep her busy, she also has to dodge the feds on her tail for suspicion of murder and defeat the evil stalking her. But hey, it's all in a days work, right?! And she thought the strange, new voice in her head was her biggest problem....
My temper flared. I was grateful he'd saved my life, but enough was enough. If I wasn't good enough for him now, I never would be – and I's taken a bullet for his niece, for God's sake.
I was done letting Jackson Byrne walk all over me.
Anyone who knows me will have realized by now that with all the books I read on the regular, romance's are my Go-To genre – ALL KINDS of romance. From dark and gritty (which are my ultimate addiction-the dirtier the better), to comedies, angst fueled, regency and paranormal, and everything in between. What many people don't know about is my love of Greek Mythology. This book was a beautiful blend of the two – with just enough of both to have me salivating for more, along with thrills, suspense, mystery and some seriously kickass women. Sure, we have our Alpha Men, which I can NEVER get enough of, but at the heart of it – the show is run by a group of women who don't have to wait around for the men to save the day. Tara was pure awesomeness. She found herself in a terrifying and strange situation that many would have lost themselves in, but she took control of it. Did she try to fight the sudden changes in her life out of fear? Of course she did, at first, but who wouldn't. That didn't stop her from going out there and trying to find the answers she needed on her own, well – with the help some some truly wicked best friends. Now Jackson spent some time pissing me off with the way he treated Tara. I get the dude had a dark past and was fighting some pretty heavy demons of his own, but that wasn't Tara's fault. He really was hard on her and downright hurtful at times. But, he did make up for it – eventually – in a pretty big way. The bad guys in this were as bad as they come, Ruby was just too damn cute for words, and there were tons of surprises along the way. There are a few steamy scenes and wicked sexual tension, lots of laughs between Tara and her besties – Alex and Rachel, and non-stop action. We aren't left with a cliffhanger per-say, Tara's story (well, part of it anyway) gets wrapped up quite nicely – however, the door is left wide open for much more to come and I cannot wait to see what this series brings us next. It was one helluva ride and an amazing debut for Nicola White.
I surrendered to the possibility that she might take control, that I might lose myself again as I had the day the oracle had spoken through Ruby, but I had to give Alecto the freedom to choose. She was a part of me now and to deny her was to deny a part of myself.
Well met, sister, the fury responded. At last, you understand.
Nicola R. White is no stranger to the fantastic. Although there are no Furies in her family tree (that she knows of), she comes from a small city on the east coast of Canada where ghost stories and superstitions abound. She has worked on movie sets, as a bartender, in a lighthouse, and as a lawyer, and though she’s never been an exotic dancer like her character, Alex Hughes, she does know how to pole dance.
She has always been fascinated by the strange and morbid, and often stays up too late reading books that give her nightmares. She believes truth is stranger than fiction, and just a few of her heroes are Buffy, Dana Scully, and Xena.
Nicola is a member of Romance Writers of America and Romance Writers of Atlantic Canada, and is an active member and supporter of the award-winning Romance Divas website and online forum.
