She silenced the ringer on her cellphone without even looking to see who it was. It would be several hours before she would check her messages and hear the news. It would be many months before she would realize that this was the call that had caused her carefully carved-out life to veer sharply in a direction she never could have anticipated.
Harper Young is living her dream. As art director of a fashion magazine, living a life of glamour in Manhattan with lots of distance between her and her painful past, everything is exactly as it should be – til one phone call changes everything. Her father was in a near fatal accident which has Harper returning to the one place she has tried so desperately to avoid – her hometown of Boulder, Colorado. Given an ultimatum by her boss – her career, or her family – as hard as it is to leave her job behind, her father takes priority and she returns home to care for him and get him back on his feet. What she wasn't expecting was to find out that her new neighbor is none other than her teenage crush, Evan-from-Heaven, the one man who has always held her heart, though he scarcely knew she existed.
Evan Donovan is no stranger to heartbreak and betrayal. When the recession hit, he not only lost his business, he lost his wife as she left him when the money ran dry. Now years later, through a lot of hard work and perseverance, and he is finally back on top of his game. His new company is thriving, and while his bed is never cold, he has learned the hard way to keep things simple – and keep his heart out of any involvement. But when his best friends little sister comes back to town, and right next door, he finds himself wondering how he never 'saw' her before. His vow to keep things simple is quickly tested.
It doesn't take long for these two to find comfort in each others arms but with both already harboring damaged hearts, and with Harper not planning on staying in town beyond her fathers recovery, it's imperative that they protect themselves as best they can from getting to close. But matters of the heart are never simple and they both find themselves falling harder and faster than either are comfortable. Can Evan convince Harper that he may be worth stick around for? Can Harper see past the ghosts that constantly haunt her long enough to realize that not everyone is out to hurt her? Or will they both be too late?
This was a completely new type of desire. It was the type that could cause a man a lot of trouble. It could ruin lifelong friendships. It could make hamburger out of his heart. His brain was telling him to leave her alone, but the rest of his body was telling his brain to shit the hell up.
This had all the ingredients for exactly the kind of romance I love to read. Teenage crush FINALLY opens his eyes and sees what he has been missing all these years. Angst, drama, tears and lots more drama with some laughs sprinkled in to keep the angst at a manageable level. Smokin hott sex. Lots of fab secondary characters and an ending that doesn't leave me screaming. The road to their HEA has plenty of bumps along the way but I like it better that way – it just seems to me that a love worth having shouldn't just be handed to you, you should have to work at it, earn it. It just makes the reward that much sweeter in the end. These two really were perfect for each other even if it took them awhile to see that, or admit to it. Both amazing characters that captured my heart but were human enough to make mistakes along the way, make dumbass decisions that had me wanting to shake the hell outta them but understanding where they were coming from at the same time. It really was one helluva journey. This was actually the first book I have read from this author but coming into the series so late in the game never left me with any confusion. I never once felt like I was missing part of the story but I did want to find out more about the characters from the previous books all the same – so I will be downloading those books and diving into them real soon. In the end, this was one of those books that I would not only read again but would highly recommend to any and all romance lovers who like more than a little drama thrown in with their sex.
“I want this, Evan. I want all of it exactly the way you've dreamed it. I'm just so scared of it all.”
“I know, but there's nothing to fear anymore. Because this is real and I'm not going anywhere. Ever. When you start feeling scared you tell me. We'll figure it out together, okay? I'll always pull you in. I promise.”
