a McKenna Chronicle #2
by Elizabeth Miller
Confused and upset by dark revelations, Charlise “Charlie” Carter ended her relationship with the beautiful yet damaged presidential hopeful, Colin McKenna.
But Charlie learns all is not lost, nor was her love given in vain. With a new understanding of how she came into Colin’s life, and his true feelings, their sensual affair continues.
Holding on to hope, Charlie gives him her heart and he’s promised to protect it and her. Yet real danger lurks at every corner, in every city and behind each door. Colin must find a way to keep her safe and by his side, all the while remaining committed to his bid on the White House.
While Colin wrestles with Charlie's security and the campaign, she struggles with new-found fame. Washington demands perfection and she is far from pure. Can Charlie remain true to herself and help Colin realize his dream? Or will outside forces tear them apart for good? Midnight Sky is a story of sacrifice and a love so true, it transcends public persecution and deep-seated insecurities.
Bare chest heaving, Colin kneels on the edge of the mattress staring: drinking me in with
those insatiable midnight blues. He doesn’t speak, he doesn’t have to. I can see everything written in the tight clench of his jaw, the tension easing as his gaze lingers over my body. He wants me, but it’s more than that. More than need, more than lust. The shadow covering his face is not enough to hide his love. I may be dinner, but it’s a feast worthy of a king.
An unexpected moan escapes my parted lips, yanking his gaze back to mine. He smiles a
feral smirk that grows as he falls to his hands and crawls over me until we’re nose to nose.
“I’m hungry bunny.”
I lick my lips and accept his mouth when he crushes mine. The hunger eating away at me
for days is released and reciprocated as we paw at each other. I’m desperate to touch, pet and claw my nails down his back. I feel his answering moan in the pulse between my thighs. It’s not enough, it’s never enough. Not with Colin. Snaking my hand between us, I unleash his belt. When I fumble at the zipper I settle for palming his erection through his pants. His mouth becomes more urgent, as does his tongue and hands.
But he breaks away, pushing up to his knees and pressing mine apart with the spread of his. The harsh sound of our labored breathing falls like the tails of a firework display all around us: explosive and ready to start of fire.
“No more games?”
“No…” I reach for his fly again with more success this time, moving under his briefs to
find his hard length. Taking back a little control my fingers glide over his penis and squeeze at the base. It’s not fair, so not fair, that he’s completely unfazed and hot as hell. A lock of hair has fallen on his forehead; no doubt released from its perfection by my grip. I want him everywhere. I want to become overwhelmed by Colin McKenna. My mouth filled with the taste of him on my tongue. Blinded by his beauty and held captive by his touch. I need to break through his implacable self-discipline and I just might know how.
“You’ve kept me waiting too long. Please…”

A soaking chill takes over. I wrap my arms around myself for protection against the weather and the devastation creeping into my heart. How do I move on from this moment? Not just in the physical sense, but more so, how do I let go of what became of my life?
How do I let go of Colin?
Charlie Carter had her heart destroyed by Colin McKenna, but walking away from him still seems harder than she could ever have expected – especially when she learns the truth behind what she discovered and realizes all is not as it seems. Colin refuses to let her go and will do whatever it takes to prove to her that what they had was real. And so, they continue on with the relationship that has changed both of their lives in unexpected ways. But loving each other comes at a price, a price higher than either are prepared for. Charlie now has to learn how to live in the media spotlight and must decide how much of herself she is willing to lose to be with Colin. But that is not the worst of their problems. There is still a crazed stalker hot on their trail and danger lurks around every corner, behind every closed door. Colin is desperate to keep Charlie safe, at any cost, and it may just be the thing that drives them apart.
I'm positioned for his every whim and ready for his command. It comes in the simplest breath fanning over my skin a silent directive to fall under his spell, to grant him access, not to just my body, but also to the farthest reaches of who I am.
That. Was. Freakin. Exhausting! And I LOVED it!!
First off, let me just say-this book is NOT A STAND-ALONE. You MUST read book one 'Midnight' first or you WILL spend a lot of time wallowing in confusion. Plus, the book was just that friggin awesome so why the hell not?!
This series so far has been packed with drama, driven by emotion, and fueled by lust, the second book even more so than the first. I waited a full 24 hours after reading it before I dove into reviewing it, simply because I was so strung out I needed to let me head cool first-or else this review would have been chock full of spoilers due to my incessant ramblings. As it is, I'm still not sure I can keep my mouth shut. So, to keep the spoilers at a minimum, I'm gonna spend very little time rehashing the plot and just talk characters.
We pick up right on the heels of book one with Charlie's heart shattered at Colin's feet. However, things are not what they seem. Once she gets the true story behind her discovery at the end of 'Midnight', her and Colin continue their epically intense romance. These two Drove. Me. Insane. Sometimes in very good ways, sometimes in very bad ways. Building a relationship when BOTH partners have demons from their past they are battling is hard enough, add in a crazy stalker and the media circus surrounding a presidential campaign trail and.... well, things are bound to get messy. The love they have for one another was clear as day, the chemistry between them is impossible to deny (as evidenced by the frequent sex-there was A LOT and it was hott as hell) and I loved the way they were each able to just be themselves around each other, uncovering parts of their personalities neither thought they would ever see again. But they are both stubborn as hell which causes more than one heated argument. And I have to admit, I kinda hated the turn Charlie is starting to take. She is losing the woman she is in trying to be what everyone thinks is in Colin's best interest and it pissed me off-more so that he didn't even see it happening right in front of his freaking eyes. The whole situation with the Montgomery's just grates on me, pisses me off and sets me on fire. I don't know why the hell Colin doesn't just evict them from his life, they're poison. I LOVE Evan, Ali, Kyle, Aiden – All of the Carter's and the McKenna's – the interactions with these characters helped to alleviate the tension surrounding Colin and Charlie on a regular basis. My heart ached for Charlie during so much of this book. Besides the obvious-her past and what she has gone through piled on top of the current danger-she is struggling to find her place in Colin's world and constantly feels like she doesn't really belong. Sadly, there is not a whole lot of reason for her to think otherwise-other than behind closed doors. There are so many times that she seems to be just completely disregarded or forgotten or pushed to the back... that girl and her situation made me cry many times and Colin just seems blind to it most times. Now maybe I'm wrong in seeing it that way, but we spend very little time in Colin's head (only twice do we go there in fact) so maybe I'm wrong, or maybe he just chooses to ignore it-I don't know, but it hurt to read and I suddenly have an EXTREME aversion to pearls. My mouth is running away from me just like I thought it would, so I am gonna cut this short. In the end just be prepared for one hell of a ride full of suspense, danger around every corner and behind every door, love and lust, sacrifice and compromise, insecurities and fear, friendship, loyalty and family. While this book doesn't end on a cliffhanger like the first one, there are still so many unanswered questions, so many unresolved issues, I cannot wait to see where this series takes us next-I can't imagine it slowing down any time soon and I have no doubt things will get a whole lot worse before they settle down. Elizabeth Miller has cemented her spot on my One-Click-Addiction List one tear, blush & scream at a time with this series and I'm as scared as I am excited to see where she goes from here.
“I've wanted you since the moment I heard your voice. It spoke to me on a level I didn't understand. Now I hear it during my easiest moments, and it calls to me at my darkest hour. You're the beginning of my end, Charlie. I'll spend the rest of my life ensuring each day brings you a happier tomorrow.”
a McKenna Chronicle #1

I fell willingly into his bed, stolen moments of passion so intense they blurred the lines of responsibility and reason. This is my story, my fall into love and fear that it could end in a heartbeat...
One destined meeting. It alters journalist, Charlise "Charlie" Carter's course. When asked to work on a Republican candidate's campaign, she's unprepared for the intense reaction she has toward the young, handsome presidential hopeful, Colin McKenna.
Unable to resist Charlie's allure, McKenna succumbs to his desire and they find themselves exploring a passionate, physical relationship that is soon tested by not only their own secrets, but his political advisers.
Traveling the country in pursuit of the presidential nomination, his career aspirations and complications from the past collide with their desire to be together, threatening to tear them apart forever. Midnight tells a compelling story of burgeoning trust, intense passion and secrets that could cause it all to unravel in a heartbeat.
***Please be aware, this is not a political drama, nor does it delve deeply into politics. Midnight is an epic romance about two people with disparate lives trying to come together. It also depicts many explicit sexual encounters and is meant for a mature reader. Midnight ends in a cliffhanger. Book II in the McKenna Chronicles, Midnight Sky, is now live.***

“If you agree to work with me, Charlie, I would like for you to enter into our agreement knowing little about me or my campaign. Base your perspective on what you learn firsthand. Can you promise me you'll forgo any research from this moment forward?”
Charlie Carter is a freelance reporter hired to work the campaign trail for presidential hopeful Colin McKenna. From the minute these two meet their attraction is clear to everyone around them, but they both fight it for very different reasons. Colin is on a path set out before him for years, his life has been organized and planned all with one goal in mind and the last thing he needs is a distraction. Charlie has a brutal history; one that has shaped the woman she is today, and one that could destroy all of Colin's hard work if linked with him. But their chemistry is hard to ignore, resulting in stolen moments of passion that ignite an affair neither were prepared for. The more they are together the more Charlie realizes she is not the only broken soul in their mix, the deeper she falls the more terrified she becomes of her past coming back to haunt her. But what happens when she realizes that someone else in their midst is harboring secrets far more damaging than hers, who will survive the fallout?
That's what scares me the most: the unknown. I revel in the odd magnetic pull, the exciting sexual attraction, and the ease and comfort simply there between us. It's all very exciting, but at the same time the path we're taking is blurred. How is it possible anything between us can end well?
I love when an author is able to take me by surprise and Elizabeth Miller certainly does that, this book was nothing like I expected. Yes the sex was smokin', but beyond that the emotions this will drag out of you are heartbreaking. Charlie and Colin are two very broken individuals who have been through so much already in life, and are completely caught off guard by their reactions to one another. But they also help each other to heal and feel things in a way they never thought they would be able to again. It causes some panic and confusion that results in them occasionally lashing out and showing some very stubborn reactions to their situation. Colin was hott-as-hell and Charlie was way stronger than she gave herself credit for, all you wanted was for them to be able to finally find some happiness. What I wasn't expecting, was in no way prepared for, and a little miffed about, was the ending. It's no secret that I am not a fan of cliffhangers and this one really packs a punch~I did the scream/cry WTF over and over and over... Seriously dude, I will be climbing the walls waiting to see where this sadistic author takes us next. I would still highly recommended this book to anyone who likes their steam mixed with some tears, a whole lotta secrets and doesn't mind having their heart cut out by the end.
My existence seems very black-and-white prior to walking into the bright, effervescent world of Colin McKenna. My stomach heaves at the thought. He has indelibly changed my future; whether it's a positive or negative change is yet to be seen.
