I feel the innocent, fragile mind that was my norm vanish into the wind, like pieces of a dandelion blowing into the darkness and fluttering down into a world of angst and bravery. White wings which were once my sign of innocence have molted into dark, ominous feathers,, piecing off one by one.
After being set up to look like a rat by her mother, Dani puts her life on the line and embraces her inner-darkness to prove her loyalty to her father and the club. But what's worse is the way Shadow has completely abandoned her. The man she gave her heart to didn't doubt her guilt for even a second, never once tried to defend her, and left her to fend for herself even knowing that there is a possibility she will end up with a bullet in her head. Scared and alone, she finds an unlikely ally in one of the members and slowly has to rebuild the trust that was lost between her and the MC.
Buried underneath the hurt of betrayal, Shadow tries to numb the pain the only way he knows how -drugs, booze, and pussy- but shaking Dani from his system proves harder than he expected. He tries to hate her, wants to hate her... but can't. He still wants her, needs her, with every fiber of his being and that just pisses him off even more. But when evidence comes to light showing that maybe Dani is innocent after all, Shadow has to face the fact that his deeply ingrained trust issues that pushed him to turn his back on her may just have lost him the one woman on this planet that could ever hold his heart and handle his demons. Will he ever be able to earn her forgiveness? When the club comes under attack and the lives of everyone involved are threatened he may just lose his chance to make things right.
I wanted to be Shadow's, to be his everything. I came at him hard when we first met. There was no denying our connection but after recent events, I'm not so sure of anything anymore.
“You're my property until I say so,” he says roughly. I can hear his teeth grit with anger as I defy him.
“Fuck. You.” I enunciate each word hatefully.
This book picks up right on the heels of the gut-wrenching cliffhanger from 'What Doesn't Destroy Us'. If you hated her mother in the first book like I did, you will want to commit murder after this one. Her single minded focus on destroying Bull and the club knew no bounds-she knew the danger she was putting her daughter in but just didn't care. This book really had me in a messed up jumble of emotions and nerves. Dani dives deeper into the darkness that she is slowly discovering resides in her, she is pissed over her mothers betrayal and devastated over Shadow's abandonment and questioning weather or not this life is really for her-she hardly recognizes the woman she is turning into. She did however bond with Bobby and the ol' ladies and that was pretty awesome. Now Shadow... that dude just pissed me way the hell off. He was so quick to turn his back on Dani, got pissed off at Bobby for believing her and essentially cut him out, but didn't want anyone else near her either claiming she was still his-not that that stopped him from getting other women nekkid. But the thing that really set me off was the fact that once he finally pulled his head outta his ass, which took half the book mind you, Dani was way too quick to forgive him. There should have been a helluva lot more groveling going on considering his utter lack of thrust and loyalty to the woman he claimed to love and he had the gull to withhold sex from her, making her practically beg for it instead of the other way around. Dani had proved to be so much stronger than that so it pissed me off to see her revert to a weak woman where he was concerned. Still.... I LOVED THIS BOOK ~ both books and everyone in them (most of them anyway) even when they were pissing me off. Shadow did eventually redeem himself, though it took me a lot longer than Dani. From start to finish this book will drag you through the ringer and hold your attention in a death grip. If Ms. Forgy hadn't already secured her spot on my One-Click-Addiction List with the last book, this one would have cemented it. I love the way this woman thinks and I CANNOT WAIT to see what she brings us next.
“You're crazy if you think I'm going to let you go that easy. I told you in the beginning you would hate me more than like me, but I'll be damned if I ever let you go again.”
