~this review may contain minor spoilers~

You're not going to disappoint her and bail, are you? I had to ask. You're the principal at the Kensington Academy, and I didn't know how you felt about all this and your career.”
“In the first place, I care more about Prim than my career. Second, how would any of this affect my career anyway?”

Sean Proper is new to the small town of Aurora, and the new Principal of a prestigious private school nearby. The school has recently undergone a damaging scandal and Sean is know as a fixer, though his new home may present more of a challenge than he anticipated. He has always been a man in charge, taking care of those around him, especially his family, for as long as he can remember. The last thing he excepted when exploring Aurora with a newcomer from the big city's eyes, was his immediate attraction to local shop owner Prim, or her genuine fear of intimacy. Prim has always been terrified of getting physically close with any man, though she is unsure why, but from the minute she meets Sean she wants nothing more to overcome that fear. As they slowly embark on a relationship in the hopes of Prim getting more comfortable around Sean, it becomes clear to him that her fear comes from a very real place; figuring it out however may be more than he can handle when so many questions, secrets, and shadows surround the woman and her past. Will they be able to get to the bottom of her many mysteries in one piece, or will the truth destroy everyone and everything in it's path.

You're a man who does everything with great forethought and intensity. That's the only reason Prim's protective walls have been knocked away. No one else could have done it, and I'm eternally grateful. However, I also worry that you're going to push yourself into an early grave because of your efforts to make everything better for everyone. Don't lose yourself to your cause.”

I hate to admit it, but I was not in love with this book and I had a hard time connecting with the characters. Sean's “voice” just came across as very feminine to me, as did most of the men, and Prim was just too much constant drama, tears, fears, too much everything for me. She was just extremely weak and seemed to have no desire to fix herself or let anyone try to help her. She would have bursts of clarity, seeing that she obviously had some issues she needed to get through, but would quickly revert back to her “I'm not worth the trouble” personality, leaving me just rolling my eyes at her more than once. I get that she went through a lot in her life, I really do, she was just too much for me personally; though that will not be the case for everyone who reads this. The thing that kept me reading this book and thoroughly engaged, hanging onto the edge of my chair, was the sheer amount of mystery surrounding Prim's family and the history in the town. Some of the stuff was way out there but totally captivating; and the author kept you hanging on til the very end, slowly revealing secret after secret, skeletons and shadows, til you didn't think your heart could take any more of the deceptions. That part of the story I really did love, the work and imagination that went into the multiple layers was in depth and amazing and for that alone I would gladly pick up another one of her books, anyone who can keeping me on my toes and guessing for an entire book is a keeper.

Just because I'm Prim doesn't mean I always have to be proper.”
“But because I'm Proper, I always need you to be Prim.”
“Prim and Proper. That sounds like a great title for a book.”
“As long as there's a happily-ever-after ending.”

Sean pulled off his boxers and added them to the pile of clothes.  He smiled at Prim and inquired as to whether or not she wanted him to do a 360 degree turn.  She shook her head and asked seriously if she could touch his skin.  He nodded.

Prim rose from the couch and came to stand in front of him.  She ran her hands along his shoulders, chest, and belly and examined his tattoo. Putting her arms around his waist, she asked about the colorful wings, what they meant, and why he’d gotten them on his chest and not his back.  As he slipped his arms around her, Sean hoped he didn’t come on the spot.

“I had the tattoo done when I was sixteen.  I was really struggling emotionally but knew I couldn’t let things get to me.  It wasn’t only my future at stake; it was Mom’s, Dad’s, and Debra’s, too.  I had to keep everything going.  If I didn’t, then the consequences would’ve been disastrous.  So, I decided to do something for myself that would remind me every day that life might be a bitch but I couldn’t give up and break or it’d be much worse for everyone else I held close to my heart.  I found a tattooist I liked, lied about my age, and explained to him what I wanted.  I’ve looked at that tattoo every day for the last fourteen years, and it makes me appreciate that I’ve never let anything break my wings.”

“Did it hurt to have the tattoo done?”

“Yes.  I knew it would, but I didn’t care.  I needed one thing that was just for me.”

Prim looked up at him and asked if she could touch his hips and legs.  He told her she could touch him anywhere she wanted.
