~this review may contain minor spoilers~

If it's true that your eyes are the window to the soul than my eyes must have been sad and dark to anyone who was really looking. Then again, I doubt anyone had ever looked that hard. And, frankly, that was fine by me. It was safer that way.

This book was so many things wrapped up in a tight little package that was impossible to walk away from, no matter how painful it was. How have I not read anything from this author before? That changes, like now-truly amazing. Jade was an incredible woman, the things she has endured and lived through have made her the skittish and scarred person she is today -which is more than a little understandable- but she doesn't let it break her. She finally reaches her limit of what she can deal with and takes back her life. Is she scared out of her mind? Absolutely. Will she let anything stop her? Hell no. And Kyler?! He was was the stuff dreams are made of, even if he is hiding things from Jade. This book will keep you on your toes right from the beginning.

It made me wonder what Kyler saw when he looked at me. Probably the same thing everyone saw. A girl who was damaged, scarred and ugly. Not that I cared. I was better off anyway. The last thing I needed was to get involved with another man. All they did was destroy me.

Jade is an addict on the run, fleeing for her life from a man who is one beating away from killing her. She is determined to clean up and take her life back, so she runs as far as she can to the last kind of place the monsters in her life would think to look for her. She ends up in the small, out of the way town of Red Blossom where fate puts her in the path of Kyler James.
Kyler is the town recluse, who locks himself away on his property and rarely leaves. He is an author who spends his time in his self-induced solitude writing. But when he sees Jade for the first time, he finds himself face to face with a girl who clearly needs help and he discovers he finally wants to let someone in-but only so far.
They are both hiding some secrets from their past, but they both recognize the others need to just live in the now instead of being buried under their pasts any longer. For the first time in a long time, Jade feels safe with another man in her life- it's such an unexpected feeling, she's not quite sure what to do with it. She still lives in fear that her personal hell will eventually catch up with her, but Kyler makes her feel protected and sure that she won't ever be forced to return to that life. But when Jade gets a peek at Kyler's latest work in progress, the shock of reading her story on his computer knocks her on her ass. There is no way he should know what he does, none at all, which leaves her questioning if she has once again put her trust in the wrong person and if this time it will lead to her ultimate downfall.

Kyler had made me believe he was different. I had started to think that maybe this time I'd chosen right. That perhaps now I'd found someone who would treat me well, not use and abuse me like the others. Now I wasn't so sure. But damn if I didn't want to believe in him.

This book will pull quite a range of emotions out of you, but the biggest one is fear. Through flashbacks, you are forced to live through some of Jade's darkest moments and it is far from pretty- it was actually kinda hard to read. But it just makes you love her that much more for pulling herself out of the situation and fighting to get her life back instead of crumbling to pieces. And Kyler's strength, determination, and patience really go a long way to helping her. But will it be enough when everything is out in the open? Amber Garza did a wonderful job of completely pulling you into this story and forcing you to stay there, even when it was a little uncomfortable. You find yourself hoping with all that you have for Jade to finally find her happy ending, even when it seems impossible. Now that Ms. Garza has landed on my radar, I don't see her going anywhere anytime soon and I'm very much looking forward to where she takes us next.

I need you to trust me. I need you to hear what I'm saying. When I look at you I see an incredibly beautiful woman.”
“What about these?” I guided his fingers over my skin, forcing him to touch my scars. “These are not beautiful, Kyler.”
Jade, your scars only make you more beautiful.”
